I keep dreaming

Monday already? Gosh, did we even have a weekend? I think I had a nano-weekend, not a real one, it was so short! I twisted my back yesterday getting in my daughter's new used little tiny car (I drive a truck usually). I don't usually have back aches but oh my goodness! I can barely walk today - I look quite humorous trying to move about. I'm good if I stay still, moving is another thing.

Many years ago, after my mom died suddenly (I lost her when I was 30 and she was 66), I used to love to sleep in hopes that I would get to see her in my dreams. I used to lay down just hoping I could fall asleep and dream. Well, as they say, with time the pain we experience gets smaller and smaller and though I love it when my mom visits my dreams, I often wake up having dreamt about art images. Very regularly ideas come to me in my dreams and I plod to the computer sleepy eyed to try and create them before they get away. I wish I had some police to capture the fleeting dreams and hold them in art jail until I get them made.

Dream Police

This is a 5 x 7 mixed media collage using faces and bodies from flickr's bobster855, all hand trimmed with scissors and hand colored. The boots are scanned and altered from a magazine picture. The hats are from keeperofthenest.etsy.com and the wings are from Itkupilli.etsy.com. These pieces were hand trimmed with scissors and slightly colored by hand. The floor is from designer Lauren Bavin of DigitalScrapbookPlace.com and the stars are from designer Holliewood Studios of Oscraps.com - all used with a commerical license. The floor was added digitally and the stars trimmed by hand and glued. The border just above the floor is from designer Sande Krieger of Two Peas in Bucket, used with a commercial license and hand trimmed and washed with color and glued. The main background was created using a texture from flickr's JoesSistah along with a face I created (altered digitally, handcolored, and rescanned and layered digitally) from a picture from the Library of Congress. The word Dream is from Crowabout.etsy.com and the striped borders were made from scrap paper and hand colored.

Oh Marsha I know that feeling Those dreams when they are so real !! They are such gifts for us who miss our loved ones so much. But me too, I mostly dream of art and that is a gift too. My best ideas come in dreams and that moment when I wake up from those dreams and can let the idea grow for a bit till a fall back asleep.

I love the idea of dream police; or idea police anyway. The best ideas seem to come when we're too far away from the art table. Then when I try to remember them, they just flit away...right at the edge of my recollection but too wispy to bring into clear focus. Why is it when my boys were younger and I had to remember my schedules as well as theirs that I could keep it all going seamlessly and now that it's just me to keep up with, it seems to always be just out of my grasp? I know, I know...age! Oh well, as long as we can laugh about it we'll be okay. I love the new piece; yet another great idea from the Tumblefish :-) Hope your back is better soon. I've had longtime back problems and they are no fun.

I love the idea of dream police (besides these guys look like they would be a heck of a lot of fun to hang out with). I dream images, too, and sometimes ideas for stories, and I try and hold on to them until I am fully awake. When people who have died come to me in my dreams, I am always so surprised, and really - thrilled, that the memory is still there (or they are visiting me from some other place). Love this piece, Marsha! It's what you do best: you make us smile while tugging at our heart strings! xox Pam

I love this piece and all the wonderful pastel colors. I was taking a nap and having those weird afternoon dreams. It was funny to wake up and read this post about the dream police.

This is really awesome Marsha! When I seen the word DREAM I thought it looked familiar hehehe
I know what you mean on the dream thing...well sort of...I never actually dream of art...sad but true...When I close my eyes at night or rub my eyes when I am sleepy I see art...colors, patterns but the more I try to remember what I saw the faster they dissolve away...urgh! I hate that LOL xoxo

Such an awesome piece..I just love it! I guess maybe your dreams were a great inspiration for this piece and such a touching story about your Mom. I hope your back is feeling better today! I woke up to the most beautiful comment from you on my blog and I bet you don't even know that everytime I hear from you, you make my day! Have a good day friend, xoxox

These handsome guys could hang out in my bedroom anytime!!! LOL Most of my dreams are in vivid, technicolor. But most of my art thoughts happen right before I fall asleep!!! I always tell myself, "I must remember that", but it seems as though those thoughts are just too whispy to stay til morning.

So sorry to hear about your back. NOT FUN! Take care and feel better soon. Hugs & Love, Terri xoxo

Marsha this piece made me laugh and laugh. I to would like your dream police to visit!

Is it a problem for all artists to have ideas pop into your head while asleep?

I for one believe it is because it is the only time my mind truly has a rest! It is so full of things I need to do for myself and everyone else and keeping it all straight doesn't allow for any creative over stuffing!

Your wonderful creative gift is such a pleasure to view.

Hello Marsha I know what you mean about having creative dreams although a lot of my ideas come from when I chill out in my yoga classes..that is why I always carry little notebooks everywhere and why the tea is often burnt while I quickly get the ideas down into a piece of art ha ha !! Thanks so much for visiting my blog and your great comments. I like this dream police art with all the layered elements in it. Off to check the artist you compared me to as I have never heard of her..thanks again and visit again soon

I love dreams from those who've gone before us - they are like a wonderful warm fuzzy. Hope you feel your Mom every time you need her.

Once again, a wonderful work of art (almost as cute as your soon to be my flamingo)!

OMG I love this piece! You are a doll to respond to my blog I have been so lazy and uninspired lately(damn muse). Saw your pieces in Somerset and loved them so much. Ive sent off newish pieces to Somerset but havent heard if they will be used or sent back. Sadly I have nothing to show for my Spring burst of art-ery.

Holy Wow! I thought I was never going to get to the end of the comments on this piece, Marsha! And all richly deserved, I might add. Just see what happens when you depict some handsome hunks! Like all your work, this piece is meticulously done. Take a bow.

Love your dream police, could you please send one of those guards over to my bedroom to catch my dreams too???!!! (I'd go for the one in purple tights, he looks strong and severe - he should be able to handcuff my dreams!)

I know I commented on flickr, but I love this piece so much. and I love the idea of art police holding dreams in art jail! such a great idea.

I had to buy a notebook to carry with me, because I kept drawing things on scraps of paper, and then had 8000 paper bits everywhere with my ideas on them. Would have great to have the art police then too!
